Scope comparison

Choosing interior finishes for a car wash

Compare finish proposals by location, cleaning routine and maintenance responsibilities.

List the surfaces exposed to the wash process and how each area will be cleaned and maintained. Ask suppliers to recommend products for those conditions and identify them in the quote.

Describe each area

Make a finish matrix with separate rows for the wash bay, equipment room and public areas. Add wall, ceiling, door and floor surfaces wherever they are in scope. For each row, record the proposed product, cleaning process, access for maintenance and the party responsible for repairs or replacement. Ask the equipment supplier to identify relevant information about the wash operation for the design team.

Include corners, doors, service openings and surfaces behind the equipment in the finish list. A large wall sample alone does not describe the complete installed assembly or how people will clean around it.

Request documented selections

Ask each proposing contractor to name the products or allowances included, the areas they cover, and the assumptions behind their selection. List the actual cleaning products you expect to use and request manufacturer confirmation of compatibility with each proposed surface. Ask the project team to check the named products against the wash equipment and cleaning methods.

Keep appearance and maintenance questions together. A surface may suit the desired look, but the owner still needs to understand cleaning instructions, access, repair options and any stated limitations. Avoid treating a broad phrase such as "wash-ready" as a detailed specification.

Compare responsibility and upkeep

Clarify who selects finishes, who installs them and who coordinates interfaces with equipment. Ask how changes to the wash package will be reviewed if they affect surrounding surfaces. Include any owner-supplied items in the same responsibility list.

Before making a decision, walk through a routine maintenance day on the plan. Identify where staff store cleaning supplies, where replacement components arrive, and which surfaces may be difficult to reach once equipment is installed.
