Apparatus planning

Measuring apparatus bays for a fire station

Document vehicles, working routines and equipment access before fixing the bay arrangement.

List each apparatus with its working dimensions, including open compartments. Show the space crews use for inspection, loading and daily checks alongside the parked vehicles.

Record each apparatus

List current vehicles with available manufacturer dimensions and configuration details. Add the equipment normally carried or accessed beside the vehicle. Identify replacement apparatus that is selected separately from longer-term possibilities. Include the date each apparatus record was checked by the department.

Ask the department's operational and technical advisers to confirm the information used for planning. Photos are useful context, but they should accompany a current equipment record rather than replace it.

Map the station routine

Describe return to station, inspection, restocking and departure. Show where supplies are retrieved and where equipment is serviced or stored. Include the people involved and the relationship between apparatus spaces and support rooms.

Discuss the movement of service vehicles and deliveries as well as emergency departures. A layout should be reviewed against normal operations and the department's own requirements, not only a single vehicle outline.

Make future assumptions visible

If a bay is intended for a different vehicle later, identify the planning assumption and the person responsible for confirming it. Ask which parts of the concept rely on that assumption and what would need review if the future apparatus changes.

Request a written scope for the building, support spaces and equipment-related work. Department-supplied items still need coordination with the project documents and construction sequence.
