A workshop's eave height does not tell you the clearance beneath every beam or door track. Check the space needed for lifts, raised equipment and maintenance work as well as normal use.
Start with equipment documents
Collect the manufacturer's installation and service information for each tall item you intend to use. Record the machine model, working position and the object it carries. For a vehicle lift, describe the vehicle as well as the lift. Ask the supplier and qualified installer to confirm the required envelope and foundation coordination.
Mark any proposed overhead storage, reels, fans or suspended equipment. These should appear as intended loads and locations in the project details rather than additions improvised after the shell arrives.
Look at a section, not only a floor plan
Ask for a view through the building showing the roof structure, door travel and equipment. Place the tallest activity where the available clearance has actually been checked. A taller door also needs coordination with its opening system and the framing above it.
Consider whether one tall bay would solve the need or whether the whole workshop benefits from extra height. The choice affects the overall building discussion, not just the roofline.
Document what must remain clear
Make a labeled list of critical operating zones and ask who verifies each one. Record minimum functional needs separately from nice-to-have headroom. That distinction helps compare alternatives without losing the reason for the height request.
