What to do after an acupuncture treatment

Rest, gentle movement and water: simple ways to care for yourself in the day or two after treatment.

From the Sanctuary Winds journal

Give the treatment room to settle

In Chinese medicine, the effects of a treatment keep working on the body's Qi for 24 to 48 hours afterward. Some people feel energized; others feel relaxed.

Choose gentle movement

Avoid rigorous exercise for the rest of the day. Gentle activity, such as walking or yoga, is a better fit.

Stay hydrated

Drink water through the rest of the day.

Tell your practitioner what you notice

Side effects are uncommon. They can include minor bruising, soreness or bleeding where a needle was placed. Mention anything you notice at your next visit, or contact the practice if you have a question sooner.

Plan your next visit together

How often to come back depends on your situation. Talk it through with your practitioner; the new patient FAQ explains how a course of care is usually agreed.
