Acupuncture in the Triangle: a local guide
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine practices in Durham, Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Cary, with how to check a license and what to ask before you book.
Choosing a practitioner
Check the license first
Acupuncturists in North Carolina are licensed by the North Carolina Acupuncture Licensing Board. Licensure requires passing the National Board exams given by the NCCAOM, which also keeps a public directory of certified practitioners.
Training runs four to six years after an undergraduate degree. What acupuncturist training and licensing mean explains the path in more detail.
Questions worth asking
- What does a first visit include, and how long is it?
- Which techniques does the practice use besides needles: herbs, cupping, moxibustion, qigong?
- How is a course of care planned, and how are fees and payment handled?

About this list
This guide lists 30 acupuncture and Chinese medicine practices across the Triangle. It was compiled in October 2026 from the federal NPPES registry of acupuncture practices and from each practice's own website. The treatments named are ones each practice lists on its own site; see each site for its full services.
A listing is not an endorsement or a referral, and the list is not complete: practices that do not bill insurance are often missing from the registry. Always confirm a practitioner's license with the state board.
