How to shape a three-minute soundscape
Arrival, discovery, change and departure.
Build the whole shape first
Place material across the complete three minutes before perfecting the opening. Give the listener enough time to settle into the bed, then introduce a detail.
Make a meaningful change
At the middle of the piece, bring in an event or remove something. Contrast can come from a change in density; it does not have to come from more volume.
Let the ending arrive
Remove a layer, revisit an earlier texture or allow a final sound to decay. Leave enough time to hear the result rather than stopping only because the timer reached three minutes.
Listen without editing
Play the entire arrangement and mark two places: where attention drops and where a transition feels rushed. Make one revision, export and listen again outside the project.
