Planning the building around dental equipment

Title formatBody

Get the equipment supplier's drawings alongside the office plan. Empty treatment rooms do not show where chairs, service connections and maintenance access will go.

## Identify the equipment package

List the operatories planned for opening day and those proposed for a later phase. Record the chair and equipment packages under consideration, their suppliers, and whether selections are final. Add imaging, laboratory, sterilization and other practice-specific equipment that belongs in the project.

Ask suppliers for their current planning documents. Keep the date and revision on each file so the contractor is not coordinating one room from an older layout and another from a newer quotation. Label preliminary material clearly.

## Review the spaces between rooms

Walk through how instruments, supplies and staff move during an appointment. Identify where items arrive, where they are stored, and where staff prepare for the next patient. Have your practice advisers review the clinical workflow; the building request should communicate that workflow rather than attempt to invent it.

Include equipment servicing in the room discussion. Ask suppliers how equipment is accessed, replaced and delivered into position. A component that fits once installed may still need a considered route through the finished building.

## Assign coordination responsibility

Prepare a list of questions for the contractor: who coordinates equipment suppliers, who designs the related building systems, and when must decisions be confirmed? Ask how changes after equipment selection will be recorded and reflected in the scope.

When comparing proposals, check whether equipment, installation and interior work are included or separate. Do not interpret the words "dental office" as an agreement about every specialty item.
