Planning drive-through apparatus bays

Title formatBody

Trace each apparatus from its bay to the road and back into the station. Include the yard space on both sides of a drive-through arrangement and any other vehicles using those routes.

## Trace return and departure

Mark the intended route for returning apparatus and the route for leaving the station. Include the property entrance, surrounding roads and any existing buildings. Use the department's actual apparatus information and have qualified project professionals review the vehicle movement.

Add staff parking, deliveries and maintenance access. Identify shared areas where different movements occur, and record them as coordination questions for the design team.

## Include the work between trips

Describe what happens after a vehicle returns: inspection, unloading, restocking or other department-defined routines. Show where those tasks occur and where supplies are kept. A continuous route through the building may still need places where vehicles pause for work.

Explain how the station should operate when an apparatus is being serviced or a bay is temporarily unavailable. Base the layout on how this department operates.

## Compare site concepts fairly

Ask the contractor and designers to compare the proposed drive-through arrangement with an alternative using the same roster and room program. Include yard circulation, doors, support rooms and future development areas in the comparison.

For an existing station, provide available plans and known site history. Identify which information still requires investigation. A concept sketch is a communication tool, not proof that the site can accommodate the desired arrangement.
