What size metal garage do you need?

Title formatBody

Park the vehicles where you want them, open every door, then mark out the workbench and shelves. You will soon see whether the garage size you had in mind leaves enough room.

## Measure more than the parked vehicles

Include mirrors, an open tailgate and any roof rack. Mark the space you use when loading groceries, getting children into the car or carrying tools past the truck. If a trailer will stay inside, measure it with the hitch.

Put storage on the sketch at its actual depth. Shelves, a freezer and a bench can take a surprising amount out of an empty-looking floor plan. Check whether you can still walk behind the vehicles once those items are in place.

## Check the doors and driveway together

Draw the route into each bay, including the turn from the driveway. A wider building will not fix an opening that is awkward to approach.

Ask the supplier to show the clear door opening and the usable clearance inside. Eave height is a different measurement. If you plan to use a vehicle lift, give the contractor the lift model and its installation requirements rather than choosing a height by eye.

## Price the two layouts you would actually use

Keep a sketch of the smallest arrangement that works and one with the extra storage or bench space you would like. Ask for both with the same doors, concrete and installation work included. That makes the price difference easier to understand.

You do not need a finished drawing to ask for a quote. Vehicle measurements, a marked-up sketch and photographs of the site give the contractor something specific to review.
