Choose the wash equipment before sizing the building

A tunnel wash, an in-bay automatic system and self-service bays need different layouts. Start with the equipment supplier's plan and show the building team how the site is meant to operate.

Identify the wash concept

Write down the wash format, equipment supplier and selection status. Include the proposed sequence from payment to wash to departure. If you are comparing systems, keep their layouts and assumptions separate instead of merging them into one provisional drawing.

Ask the supplier for its current planning package. Record the revision date and identify which information remains preliminary. Include equipment rooms, operator stations and other spaces outside the visible wash bay.

Follow servicing and deliveries

A building needs to accommodate more than a customer's vehicle. Ask how equipment is delivered, installed, serviced and eventually replaced. Show where supplies arrive and where staff can access equipment without relying on the public vehicle route.

List the building interfaces the supplier expects the project team to coordinate. Assign a decision owner for each unresolved item. The contractor, equipment supplier and appropriate designers should agree on the information needed before related work proceeds.

Separate the packages

Request a written division of responsibility for the building, wash equipment, installation, utility work and site improvements. Ask who coordinates the boundaries and how changes in equipment selection affect the proposal.

Then test the concept on the property. Mark waiting vehicles, the wash approach, departure, staff parking and servicing access. Check the customer queue and exit as well as the equipment layout.
