One wide garage door or two separate doors?

One wide opening and two separate doors give you different ways to park and use the walls. Try both on a sketch that includes the driveway, not just the front of the building.

Draw the turn into each bay

Show where the vehicle is before you turn toward the garage. Include a gate, a parked second car or a trailer that sometimes occupies the drive. An opening centered on the front wall may still be awkward to approach from one side.

Trace the route on foot too. A separate walk door can be useful when you are collecting tools or going to the freezer. Put it where a parked vehicle or a run of shelving will not block it.

Put the bench and cupboards on the same drawing

Compare the wall space left by each door arrangement. Mark cabinets, outlets and the workbench, then ask the building supplier how the doors fit the frame. Have any plans to widen or add an opening later reviewed before relying on that option.

Door type is a separate choice from door count. Ask the supplier to show the space taken up by the selected door and its operating equipment, both above the opening and inside the garage.

Ask for the complete installed price

For each option, list the clear opening, door type, controls, hardware and installation. Confirm which contractor supplies and installs the door, and who checks it against the building's engineering requirements.

Keep the rest of the garage specification the same when comparing the alternatives. Otherwise a difference in concrete, insulation or installation can be mistaken for the cost of changing the doors.
