Comparing hangar door systems

Give each door supplier the same aircraft dimensions and operating requirements. Ask about the clear opening, installation, controls and service access, as well as the door itself.

Describe a normal opening

Explain who operates the door, how often it opens and what equipment or vehicles may be nearby. Show the aircraft approach and the area immediately inside and outside the hangar. Ask each supplier to describe the space its proposed system uses throughout operation.

Include the circumstances that matter to your ownership arrangement. A private owner, a shared hangar and a managed facility may need different operating procedures and service arrangements. Record these expectations without assuming one mechanism suits every setting.

Request coordinated information

Ask for the supplier's current planning drawings and stated requirements. Have the building designer review them before the door is treated as an interchangeable accessory. Identify the party responsible for integrating the door information with the building package.

Clarify what the proposal includes: door supply, installation, controls, related building work and the handoff to the owner. If multiple firms are involved, put a name beside each responsibility.

Discuss service over time

Ask how routine maintenance is performed, who provides support in the project area, and what access a service technician needs. Request the manufacturer's operating and maintenance information rather than relying on a general sales description.

Compare how each option fits the actual site, aircraft and operating plan. Keep unresolved issues on a short decision list and note which party will answer them. A door that looks right in a rendering still needs coordinated documentation.
