Measuring your RV for a garage

Measure the rig with its roof equipment, mirrors and hitch. Then check the approach to the proposed garage. The vehicle's brochure dimensions are only part of the information needed to choose the door and building size.

Capture the travel envelope

Record the make and model and consult the vehicle documentation. Include installed rooftop equipment and accessories in the information you give the contractor. Have uncertain measurements checked safely rather than climbing or improvising a risky measuring method.

Sketch the approach from the driveway through the door. Note slopes, turns and whether you arrive with a tow vehicle or trailer. Ask the contractor to review the whole path, not just a vertical measurement at the center of the opening.

Distinguish parking from use

Will slides be extended indoors? Do you need access to storage compartments, batteries or service panels? Do you expect to walk around the RV, load supplies or perform maintenance? Draw these activities at the same time as the parked vehicle.

Ask the building and door suppliers to show clear opening, overhead door travel and usable interior space. Eave height and door clearance are different quantities and should be labeled separately on your comparison.

Leave an evidence trail

Keep photographs, equipment notes and the proposed parking orientation together. If you may replace the RV, describe the future vehicle envelope as a separate design goal instead of assuming today's fit covers it.
