Where to put a metal shed in your yard

Walk from the proposed shed location to the places you use the mower, tools or stored supplies. Check the route with the largest item you will move, including any gates along the way.

Walk the route with the equipment

Start where you use the mower, garden cart or tools, then travel to the proposed shed. Notice gates, slopes, tight corners and places where paths cross household activity. Sketch the route with the largest item you expect to move. A spacious shed behind an awkward gate can still be frustrating.

Consider delivery and construction access separately. The route that works for a wheelbarrow may not suit the equipment needed to build the shed. Ask the contractor to review access before you finalize the spot.

Mark the known constraints

Gather boundary information, existing structure locations and available utility records. Ask the local jurisdiction what it needs to review your proposed shed and location. Have the appropriate parties verify constraints rather than estimating setbacks or buried service positions from a photograph.

Think about views from the house, doors that face private areas and space for maintenance around the exterior. Leave future yard projects visible on the sketch so the shed does not unintentionally block them.

Compare two locations

For each option, record the access route, ground observations and unanswered questions. A side-by-side site sketch gives the contractor something concrete to assess.
