How to compare steel building kits

Two kits with the same outside dimensions may include different doors, panels and drawings. Compare the package lists and the work left to you, not just the photographs.

Make the package visible

Ask each supplier for a component schedule. Identify framing, roof and wall panels, trim, fasteners, openings and optional items. Distinguish an opening framed for a door from a door supplied and installed. Check what the insulation description includes, especially accessories and installation responsibility.

Record the intended use and property location consistently across inquiries. Suppliers need the same project information to propose comparable packages. Any engineering assumptions or unresolved site information should be visible rather than hidden behind a general description.

Price the missing work separately

Delivery, unloading, storage, lifting equipment, foundations and erection may sit outside the kit price. Ask who provides each service and when it must be arranged. A lower material total can still represent a larger owner-managed project.

Review how damaged, missing or incorrectly supplied parts are reported. Keep the supplier's documented process with the purchase information so the receiving team knows what to inspect.

Keep an apples-to-apples worksheet

  • Same building use and site assumptions.
  • Same enclosed area and opening schedule.
  • Same roof, wall and finish selections.
  • Explicit delivery and unloading responsibilities.
  • Clear boundaries between supplied and installed work.
