body | You don't need a darkroom to develop film. You need darkness for about three minutes, while the film goes from its cassette onto a reel and into a light-tight tank. A changing bag does that on a kitchen table. Everything after happens with the lights on.
The chemicals do three jobs. Developer turns the exposed silver into a visible image. Stop bath halts development at once. Fixer removes the unexposed silver so the film is no longer sensitive to light.
A standard tank needs about 300 ml of each solution to cover one 35mm roll, and 500 ml for a roll of 120. Check the base of your own tank; the volumes are moulded into it.
Wear gloves, keep the window open, and never use the jugs for food again. |
