Properties

KeyValue
bodyA sound bead is even in width, with ripples spaced regularly along it, and it blends into the base metal on both sides without a step or a groove. Evenness tells you travel speed and arc length were steady. Porosity is small round holes in or on the bead. Gas was trapped as the metal froze: the shield failed, or the metal was dirty, wet or painted. Undercut is a groove melted into the base metal along the edge of the bead and left unfilled. The current was too high or the travel too fast. It thins the plate exactly where the stress concentrates. Lack of fusion is filler sitting on top of the base metal without having melted into it. It can look acceptable from above and peel off under load. The heat was too low, or the arc was pointed at the puddle instead of the joint.
