notesUNVERIFIED and deliberately left that way: what this row demands is THRESHOLD-DEPENDENT and a wrong threshold is worse than a known gap. The questions a 2016 Sprinter 2500 built out as a mobile retail shop actually turns on, none of which were read off a Department of Revenue class table: (1) whether it registers on a passenger plate or a freight/for-hire class, which follows the declared gross weight and whether the operation is for hire — Tennessee issues a commercial fleet series and T.C.A. 55-4-113 sets the freight schedule; (2) what the declared maximum gross weight has to be for a built-out van carrying stock; (3) whether the build-out changes how the vehicle is titled (a motorhome conversion and a commercial truck register, insure and sometimes licence differently, and that classification is per vehicle); (4) whether a USDOT number or apportioned IRP plates are needed, which turn on interstate operation and a weight threshold around 26,000 lb. Take the VIN, the declared weight and a description of the build to the Knox County Clerk's vehicle services counter and ask which class applies before buying a plate.
